Spaces went live quietly. The very first one — "Life then versus now" (category: Identity, tagline: "In case you're curious, life was very different several decades ago") — was created on May 11, 2026. It picked up 35 members and stayed a curiosity for over a week. Nothing else got created for nine days.
Then, on May 21, something shifted. A user made "Vent It Out" — no gimmick, no niche hook, just "Because you shouldn't carry it alone." It's still one of the largest Spaces on the platform today (361 members, 45 posts), and it set the tone for what Spaces would actually become: less a forum-by-topic, more a room-by-feeling. Within the same week, "Late Night Loops" and "Heavy Minds" showed up — both built around the same insight, that people wanted somewhere to put the 1am thoughts that don't fit anywhere else.
The first month (May 11 – June 8) produced just 26 Spaces total, almost all self-organized around emotional release or identity ("Feminists For Real," "To Be A Man," "Keralites"). It was organic, slow, and user-led — nobody at Kai was prompting these creations.
Evolution: the Spark effect
Then the growth curve bent hard:

Spaces creation was basically flat until the June 12 Spark launch. Spark's ~11x jump in daily signups didn't just add users — it added creators. In the two weeks after launch, Space creation jumped 10x+ from the pre-Spark baseline, and the character of what got built changed too: dating and connection-seeking Spaces ("Spontaneous Connections," "DATING space," "Blind Dates") suddenly dominated the top of the leaderboard, alongside the original vent/identity genre.

From a single post on May 11 to 302 living, breathing communities in exactly two months, Spaces has grown the way the best neighborhoods do — not by design, but by people showing up and building what they needed to find. A hundred different rooms now hold everything from 1am confessions to blind dates to quiet identity work, and every single one of them was started by a user, not an editor. That's the real story here: nobody at Kai picked the winners. You did.
So if you've read this far and haven't joined a Space yet — pick one that sounds like home, or better yet, if the room you need doesn't exist, build it. Every Space on this list started as one person deciding to make space for something. Yours could be next.
